Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd (GBC) is Ghana’s premium and only operating bauxite mine committed to producing high-quality trihydrate bauxite while upholding the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and operational excellence.

Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd (GBC) is jointly owned by Ofori-Poku Company Limited (a wholly indigenous owned Ghanaian Company) (80%) and Government of Ghana (20%). The Government of Ghana’s interest in GBC is held by the Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (“GIADEC”).

Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd mine, process, and supply high-quality trihydrate bauxite, the raw material used in the production of alumina and aluminium, serving customers in both local and international markets.

Bauxite is a soft, clay-like rock naturally occurring ore that serves as the raw material for aluminum production and other useful products. It is located typically in tropical zones, created by the intense weathering of rocks over millions of years.

Generally, it is commonly referred to as bauxite ore, alumina or oxide. This rock, which contains a high amount of alumina, also includes other useful minerals. It is widely used in daily life such as in making plastics, rubbers, cosmetics (like nail polish and blush), production of paper, purification of water, refinement of petroleum products, dental cement production etc.

Bauxite is normally refined into alumina, which is then smelted to produce aluminium used in construction, transportation, packaging, abrasive, electronics industries in making aircrafts, ships, utensils and for many other industrial uses. From toothpaste to paint, cement, furnace, stove, there are countless uses of these substances in day-to-day products. Ghana Buaxite Company Ltd produce approximately 2 million tonnes of bauxite annually (metallurgical type), with typical alumina content of 52% and low silica of 1.5%. Ghana Bauxite, therefore, produces one of the best premium trihydrate bauxite ore across the globe.

Alumina, chemically known as aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), is a versatile compound extracted from the natural bauxite ore. After the impurities are refined out of the ore, it turns into a bright white powder. Averagely, 90% of all alumina produced goes to smelters to be converted into aluminum metal.

The Awaso bauxite mine in the Western North Region of Ghana has been the main backbone of GBC’s operations since the 1940s. The 35.5 sq.km concession area contains five bauxite-capped hills (Afumba, Boakakhirri, Subri, Ichiniso, and Kanayerebo) sitting on a plateau 515 metres above sea level that extends from Sefwi-Bekwai to Asawinso. GBC’s 30-year mining lease covers three of these hills (Subri, Ichiniso, and Kanayerebo, totalling 29.39km²), with the remaining hills representing significant future resource potential.

The deposit produces one of the world’s highest-quality trihydrate bauxite grades: 52% alumina content and just 1.5% silica.

Currently, ore is transported approximately 240 km via 45 m³ haulage trucks to the Port of Takoradi, where a mechanised loading system handles up to 2,500 tonnes per hour directly to capsize bulk carriers to international market across the world. GBC normally ship to China, Europe and other countries. GBC achieved a record 1.8 million metric tonnes in 2024. The company aims to increase its production to 5 million tonnes per year using modern precision surface mining technologies in the new Subri Hill mine pit in the Western North Region of Ghana, West Africa.

With its head office located in Accra, Ghana, it has two operational branches with its mining operations in Awaso in the Western North Region of Ghana, and shipment through the Takoradi Port Office in charge of administrative and logistics operations, supporting exports through the ports to the international market. The Takoradi mechanised loading system handles up to 2,500 tonnes per hour directly to capsize bulk carriers, enabling monthly throughput exceeding 400,000 tonnes, and ships the product to aluminium smelters and refineries in China and Europe.

We constantly have slots for national service personnels throughout our regional branches. We create an enabling working environment and lay strong foundation for service personals, whom, based on competence are most employed after their service.

GBC is focused on unlocking the full potential of Ghana’s mineral resources through sustainable growth, operational excellence, and strategic investment. Our long-term vision includes expanding production capacity, modernising mining operations, improving processing and logistics infrastructure, and adopting innovative technologies such as surface miners to enhance efficiency and environmental performance.

As we continue to invest in our people, equipment, and communities, we remain committed to responsible mining practices that create lasting value for our stakeholders while contributing to Ghana’s economic development and the global aluminium value chain.

Our vision is to deliver premium bauxite through sustainable mining practices.

Our mission is the commitment to leveraging our decades of experience to responsibly extract and deliver high-quality bauxite ore while upholding the highest standards of safety, operational excellence, environmental stewardship, community engagement and legacy and leaving a lasting positive impact for future generations.

We support community-based projects that can make a difference in the life of the people in a sustainable way without creating dependency. We also assist regional development, training and employment and small business opportunities.

We invest in our host communities through employment, education, healthcare, infrastructure development, local procurement, and community engagement initiatives. In addition to GBC’s commissioning of a dedicated Community Relations Office in Awaso to strengthen engagement with local chiefs, authorities and residents, it has retained an industry consultant to conduct preliminary feasibility studies for establishing an alumina refinery at Awaso. This pivotal step would enhance GBC’s value proposition by processing extracted bauxite into higher-value alumina locally, creating significant employment opportunities for local communities and contributing significantly to the overall economic development of the Western North Region of Ghana.

Among other things, GBC is actively expanding its mine operations across the Awaso concession’s five bauxite-capped hills. With the transition from traditional drill-and-blast to surface mining and investment in new equipment (including surface miners, haulage trucks, and dump trucks.

GBC has significantly expanded its port stockpile area at Takoradi with new heavy equipment, including additional dozers and excavators. A state-of-the-art flag lighting system has been installed for after-hours operations, improving loading efficiency and consistent shipping schedules for customers.

GBC’s active land reclamation programme rehabilitates mined areas through re-grading, topsoil replacement, and replanting with indigenous species. Aligned with the UN SDGs, we implement efficient waste management strategies and participate in biodiversity protection programmes including reforestation and habitat preservation.
