Our Operations
From extraction at the Awaso mine to export through the Port of Takoradi, every step of our operation is built on precision, reliability, and respect for the land.
Precision Mining at Awaso
The Awaso bauxite mine in the Western North Region of Ghana has been in continuous operation since the 1940s. The 35.5 sq.km concession area contains five bauxite-capped hills (Afumba, Boakakhirri, Subri, Ichiniso, and Kanayerebo) sitting on a plateau 515 metres above sea level that extends from Sefwi-Bekwai to Asawinso. GBC’s 30-year mining lease covers three of these hills (Subri, Ichiniso, and Kanayerebo, totalling 29.39km²), with the remaining hills representing significant future resource potential.
The deposit produces one of the world’s highest-quality trihydrate bauxite grades: 52% alumina content and just 1.5% silica. Ore is transported approximately 240 km via 45 m³ haulage trucks to the Port of Takoradi, where a mechanised loading system handles up to 2,500 tonnes per hour directly to capsize bulk carriers. GBC achieved a record of 2 million metric tonnes in 2025.
From Ground to Port
A streamlined, end-to-end operation designed for reliability and quality.
Exploration & Planning
Geological surveys identify high-grade bauxite deposits. Mining plans are developed with environmental impact assessments.
Extraction
GBC is transitioning from traditional drill-and-blast to modern surface mining techniques, supported by a new fleet of surface miners, haulage trucks, and dump trucks.
Processing
Ore is screened, crushed, and beneficiated on site to produce export-grade trihydrate bauxite (52% alumina, 1.5% silica), meeting the exacting specifications of global aluminium producers.
Export
Product is transported approximately 240 km via haulage trucks to the Port of Takoradi and shipped by bulk carrier to customers in China and Europe.
