What is Ghana Bauxite Company (GBC)?
Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd (GBC) is Ghana’s only operating bauxite mining company and one of Africa’s leading producers of premium metallurgical-grade trihydrate bauxite.
With decades of mining experience at Awaso in Ghana’s Western North Region, GBC has established a strong reputation for operational excellence, responsible mining, environmental stewardship, and reliable product quality.
Today, the Company continues to invest in modern mining technologies, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth to support Ghana’s vision of developing an integrated aluminium industry.
Who owns Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd?
Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd is jointly owned by:
- Ofori-Poku Company Limited (OPCL) – 80%
- Government of Ghana (through the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation – GIADEC) – 20%
This partnership combines private-sector efficiency with Government’s long-term commitment to developing Ghana’s strategic mineral resources and expanding value addition within the country’s aluminium industry.
What does Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd do?
GBC mines, processes, and supplies premium-quality metallurgical-grade trihydrate bauxite, the principal raw material used in producing alumina and aluminium.
Our products are exported to international customers and support industries including:
- Aluminium production
- Construction and infrastructure
- Transportation
- Manufacturing
- Packaging
- Renewable energy
- Consumer goods
As part of its long-term growth strategy, GBC is also supporting the development of an alumina refinery in Ghana, which will significantly increase local value addition and strengthen Ghana’s position within the global aluminium value chain.
What is bauxite?
Bauxite is the world’s principal ore of aluminium.
It is a naturally occurring rock formed over millions of years through the weathering of aluminium-rich rocks in tropical and subtropical climates. After mining, bauxite is refined into alumina through the Bayer Process. Alumina is then smelted to produce aluminium, one of the world’s most versatile and widely used metals.
In addition to aluminium production, bauxite and alumina are used in the manufacture of:
- Abrasives
- Cement
- Ceramics
- Chemicals
- Cosmetics
- Paper
- Petroleum refining
- Refractory products
- Water treatment materials
Because of its wide range of industrial applications, bauxite ore is regarded as one of the world’s most important mineral resources.
Why is bauxite important?
Bauxite forms the foundation of the global aluminium industry.
Aluminium is valued for being lightweight, durable, corrosion-resistant, and infinitely recyclable, making it one of the most sustainable engineering materials available today.
Products derived from bauxite are used extensively in:
- Buildings and infrastructure
- Aircraft and aerospace technology
- Motor vehicles
- Marine and rail transport
- Electrical transmission
- Electronics
- Renewable energy systems
- Food and beverage packaging
- Household appliances
Ghana Bauxite Company’s premium trihydrate bauxite is recognised for its high alumina content (52%) and low reactive silica (1.5%), making it particularly suitable for efficient alumina refining and aluminium production.
The Company currently produces approximately 2 million tonnes of premium bauxite annually and is implementing major investments in mining technology, equipment, and operational efficiency to increase production capacity to 6 million tonnes per annum, reinforcing its position as one of Africa’s leading bauxite producers.
What is alumina?
Alumina (Al₂O₃), also known as aluminium oxide, is a fine white powder produced by refining bauxite through the Bayer Process. It is the essential intermediate product used in the manufacture of aluminium metal.
Approximately 90% of the world’s alumina production is used in aluminium smelting, while the remainder is used in a wide range of industrial applications, including abrasives, ceramics, refractories, electronics, water treatment, and specialty chemicals.
As Ghana advances its vision of developing an integrated aluminium industry, alumina production will play a vital role in adding value to the country’s abundant bauxite resources before they reach international markets.
Where does Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd operate?
Ghana Bauxite Company’s mining operations are located at Awaso in the Western North Region of Ghana, where bauxite mining has been undertaken for more than eight decades.
The Company’s mining lease covers approximately 35.5 square kilometres and encompasses all five bauxite-capped hills within the Awaso concession:
- Afumba
- Boakakhirri
- Subri
- Ichiniso
- Kanayerebo
These deposits contain some of the world’s highest-quality metallurgical-grade trihydrate bauxite, providing a strong foundation for GBC’s long-term growth and supporting Ghana’s ambition to become a leading participant in the global aluminium industry.
What makes GBC’s bauxite unique?
GBC produces premium metallurgical-grade trihydrate bauxite that is recognised for its consistently high quality and suitability for alumina refining.
The Company’s ore is characterised by:
- High available alumina content
- Low reactive silica
- Consistent product quality
- Excellent refining characteristics
These qualities enable customers to achieve higher refining efficiencies, lower processing costs, and improved alumina recovery, making GBC’s bauxite highly valued in international markets.
The Company’s commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement ensures that customers receive products that consistently meet international specifications.
How does GBC transport and export its bauxite?
After mining and processing at Awaso, bauxite is transported approximately 240 kilometres by road to the Company’s export facilities at the Port of Takoradi.
At Takoradi, the ore is stockpiled, quality-controlled, and loaded onto ocean-going bulk vessels through a modern mechanised ship-loading system capable of loading up to 2,500 tonnes per hour.
GBC currently exports its products primarily to customers in China and the Middle East, particularly the United Arab Emirates, where the Company’s premium-quality bauxite is used in alumina refineries serving global aluminium markets.
The Company continues to invest in logistics, port infrastructure, and operational efficiency to support future production growth and enhance customer service.
Where are GBC’s offices and operational facilities located?
Ghana Bauxite Company operates from three strategic locations that support its mining, logistics, and corporate functions.
